Available for low or no cost, rain barrels are placed near an outside wall to catch rainfall off the roof.  On a sunny day this may sound like patent silliness.  In general, for every inch of rain that falls on a catchment area of 1,000 square feet, you can expect to collect approximately 600 gallons of rainwater.

Check with your local water district and SoCal WaterSmart for rain barrel rebates.
